Last night while watching T.V. after such a long time, an advertisement just striked a cord!

All of you must have seen Vidya Balan's ad favouring cleanliness and sanitation facilities in Indian villages or rural areas to be precise. 'Jaha Soch wahi Shochalaya' says the slogan!

Most of us just laugh it off but I was quite shaken by that cruel reality. I was horrified even at the thought of imagining myself in such a condition. Open defecation is one of the most horrible thing one could be subject to and ironically, three-fourth of the indian population that resides in the rural areas is prone to the same.

Hands down, I totally favour this effort and the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyaan initiated by the Indian Government which aims on providing clean and hygienic sanitation facilities in the Indian villages.

The Indian government has undoubtedly provided with public toilets all over the radar but they have left the hygiene and cleanliness of the same to the genies. The person incharge, sits outside to pocket the charge of using the toilet but the same is not used to maintain the hygiene.

Open defecation is not just a severly unhealthy practice in the Indian rurals but also in the most civilized areas of the Indian territory.

The rural women are the ones who are most affected by the open defecation. It impacts the dignity of a woman and rips off the basic amenity of privacy. Where on one hand, the village women are still bound to hide their faces behind the veil in front of elders and other men, they are asked to defecate in open!
I wonder how does that even makes sense to them!?

Nobody, in the villages, is willing to spend a few bucks to make a toilet. After all, what are the fields for? They will feel left out if the villagers start to use toilets. #crazylogic #jugaad

The cost that they pay for this jugaad is too high.

The children who are open to such dirty environment and surrounding are in a grave danger. Several germs house such dirt and the effect on the village children results in dangerous diseases like diarrhoea, jaundice and what not.

Searching for the same, I stumbled upon a campaign by Domex, HUL's flagship sanitation brand which is currently running the Domex Toilet Academy (DTA) programme. The programme was launched on 19th of November, 2013. There aim is to become a sustainable and long-term solution to provide sanitation that benefits the local community and helps stimulate the local economy. The Toilet Academy makes toilets accessible and affordable, while promoting the benefits of clean toilets & good hygiene. They have successfully brought about the change in the villages of Maharashtra and Orissa. They aim to build 24000 toilets by 2015 in rural areas faced with the problem of open defecation. So, in order to spread the word and make this change happen, Domex took an initiative #Toiletforbabli wherein with each click by us, Domex contributes Rs. 5 on our behalf to make villages 'Open-defecation' free.
