Rise Above Fear Kyunki Darr Ke Aage Jeet Hai!

Fears are educated into us, and can, if we wish, be educated out.

Karl Augustus Menninger

When asked on what fears you the most, ‘Public speaking’ was my reply… Not instantly though as I was speaking in front of public. yes, i know its silly, but i know that a lot of people reading this will be nodding their heads towards the end.

I might not have gone mountain climbing or skiing or maybe sky diving because those things, heights or depth do not haunt me as much as standing in front of a bunch of people who are all holding their breaths to mock you as soon as you open your mouth.
Yes, I’m afraid of public speaking! I’m afraid of those big weird faces laughing at me and making me think… i cant even think at that time!

Facing an audience has made my legs wobbly since childhood. even though i have braced the stage so many times for collecting prizes or other activities like dancing and singing (yea, bragging :P) but nothing has shaken me more than speaking on stage.

But this fear couldn’t cripple me enough to not let me fight against it. i took part in extempore at school level twice, although to make a fool of myself only, but still.

Being a CA student, my communication skills ought to be strong, to present myself in front of the client. so, the institute incorporated trainings to smooth-en our soft skills. I took part in plays, numerous presentations, games, speeches, extempore, interviews and what not.

Now that I’ve successfully completed three of them, my fear has lessened. So much so that in my last training I voluntarily stood up to give a speech and kind of nailed it. 😀

No, i haven’t savored victory over my fear yet but i surely am on the way to achieve it.
The butterflies in my stomach still fly making me uneasy when i have to go up to the stage but i am better at it now and… I know that it wont last. I will be victorious.

“Students of public speaking continually ask, “How can I overcome
self-consciousness and the fear that paralyzes me before an
audience?”
Did you ever notice in looking from a train window that some
horses feed near the track and never even pause to look up at the
thundering cars, while just ahead at the next railroad crossing a
farmer’s wife will be nervously trying to quiet her scared horse as
the train goes by?
How would you cure a horse that is afraid of cars—graze him in a
back-woods lot where he would never see steam-engines or
automobiles, or drive or pasture him where he would frequently see
the machines?
Apply horse-sense to ridding yourself of self-consciousness and
fear: face an audience as frequently as you can, and you will soon stop shying. You can never attain
freedom from stage-fright by reading a treatise. A book may give
you excellent suggestions on how best to conduct yourself in the
water, but sooner or later you must get wet, perhaps even strangle
and be “half scared to death.” There are a great many “wetless”
bathing suits worn at the seashore, but no one ever learns to swim
in them. To plunge is the only way.”
