How To Be The Change You Want To See In This World

11:07:00 PM 13 Comments A+ a-

Do you want to bring a change in this world?

You probably answered in affirmative and if you didn't, then you must belong to another world but let's just assume that you said yes, so, what now?

What should you do to bring the change? You must have heard that insanely popular saying, 'Be the change you want to see in the world', well, it's easier said than done. Even if you have changed a little, how is the world supposed to know about it? How will your little acts make a difference?

Thanks to the Internet, that problem is solved. The very details from the flavour of your coffee to the colour of the capsicum in your pizza can be shared with the world, in a moment's notice.

The question is, how can you bring about this change?

I'll tell you what I do.

If you have been a regular reader of my blog, you must be knowing that I write for #1000Speak, like the one about the art of emphatic listening, a community that has bloggers from different parts of the world who write on various aspects of compassion, every month. I started writing for this initiative since March '15 and have been writing consistently since then.

What urges me to write about it? That feeling that if a person in distress reads what I wrote, they'll have a voice to fight that internal conflict and be compassionate, to themselves as well as others.

I know that my blog is just another blog like the million others on the internet, but what gives me the satisfaction is that even if one person reads it, and they find it in their heart to bring a change starting from themselves, my purpose would be fulfilled.

I find solace in the fact that someone, somewhere, in a distant part of this world has been inspired, has had an upliftment through the words I wrote.

We all have it in us, the capability to affect others, to bring a change, you just have to find the medium that works for you and bam! (Yeah, I know. Not the right closure, but you get the idea, right?)

About #1000Speak:

1000 Speak is a wonderful initiative started by two wonderful ladies, Yvonne and Lizzi, who wondered what it would be like if 1000's of people from different parts of the world wrote on compassion on a particular day. The result was, 'a world lot more compassionate'. People from everywhere in the world enthusiastically participated in this initiative and hence, a village was formed. A village of people willing to share their stories and the moments of compassion they have experienced or are willing to experience.

I've written several posts about Compassion and it's all good but does it end here?

The most important thing here is to not just preach but to practice as well. I don't want someone to point at me and say, 'words, mere words', but it doesn't mean that everything I do should be shared with the world.

The acts of kindness are praised heartily if they aren't boasted about by the person who performed them. Other than that, it's all show business.

"Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you."
~ A verse from the Bible

So, coming back to how you can bring a change, it all points toward one word, Compassion.

A random act of kindness can leave a deep and lasting effect on the mind and soul of a person that helps him to become empathetic. The world is need of compassion, a lot of compassion. It is the duty of all of us who are fortunate enough to have a compassionate soul to spread the kindness we have been endowed with, to make this world a much better place to live in for our coming generations.

What can YOU do about it?

So, the next time:

  • You see a homeless man sleeping uncovered on the pathway on a chilly winter morning, don't miss your chance of lessening his suffering by offering him a blanket.
  • You see a wounded person, rush for help rather than thinking about the legal consequences of the cause of the wound.
  • You see a hungry animal or an animal in distress, don't forget to toss some food and relieve it of the pain.
  • You hear of a tragedy, don't hesitate in offering your support.
  • Your child makes a mistake, tell them it's okay and they won't lose you because of it. Remember that a child should never be threatened with loss of love because there is no pain deeper than the loss of losing a loved one. Nurture compassion in them.
  • Your supposedly selfish friend asks for help, leave all the pre-conceptions you have and show your compassion.
  • You do something that makes you loathe yourself, offer self-compassion to your soul.
  • You see an animal, be it social or literal, in need of help, give yourself a chance to make someone's life better. Be compassionate to them.
You have to realize that in you vests the power to change someone's entire life with one kind deed.

Check out this beautiful video that I stumbled upon on Facebook. It explains beautifully how one compassionate event can lead to another creating a sequence of heartwarming acts:

I hope that now you have an idea about how you can be the change you want to see in this world.

Happy Holidays, Bye Bye! :)

This post is part of #1000Speak for Compassion movement for 20th December, 2015. Last month over 1000 bloggers from all around the world spoke on Gratitude, to make a difference, however small. They spoke to affect positive change and to instill hope. To get the message out that the world still cares. Is it surprising then that it was a great success? So #1000speak is back again this month to speak about compassion with the spotlight being on 'Compassion'.

In January '16, we will be talking about “Forgiveness”. If you are interested in joining the #1000Speak movement, please follow the blog and join the Facebook group to connect with other participants and exchange ideas for the monthly topic. You do not need to be a blogger to participate! You can email your submission to and it will be published on the blog on Jan 20th.

Thanks so much for your inspirational post, Radhika. I really liked how you emphasized the need for action...more than words. That words without action are meaningless, or even worse, empty and fake. I have been doing 1000speak since it started and it's really helped me prioritise compassion in my life. I have made some great friendships with inspirational bloggers and gained a much more global perspective on things. It's been great! Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year xx Rowena

Blogging and the community it creates is amazing. I like what you say when you say if only one person reads this. Pretty much the same reason I blog. And yes compassion is soo, so important.

Nicely captured Radhika, compassion is a beautiful word and I really liked the connection to Gratitude in it. A little compassion can go a long way in making the world such a better place :)

That's really a nice initiative. Your words says a lot and not only a single person but many more must have changed their lives from this blog for sure :) The topics of #1000Speaks movement are really great and a must in anyone's life. It's pleasure reading your article.
